Fuel Crisis: NNPP Urges Tinubu to Seek Jonathan’s Assistance

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to seek the assistance of former President Goodluck Jonathan in addressing the country’s ongoing economic challenges, particularly the escalating fuel crisis.

It was reported earlier by AFRIPOST that fuel prices had surged at NNPC retail outlets, with prices rising from ₦897 per litre to ₦1,030 in Abuja, and from ₦868 to ₦998 per litre in Lagos. These price hikes have further strained the already struggling Nigerian populace.

Reacting to the situation, Dipo Olaoyoku, the National Secretary of the NNPP, told Punch in an interview that the current administration had shown a lack of the necessary skills and leadership to resolve the nation’s problems.

He said, “At this point, nothing surprises us anymore. This government seems devoid of solutions. When there is a crisis, and the administration looks for easy fixes, it signifies that Nigeria is heading down a long, difficult road.”

Olaoyoku criticized President Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy on his first day in office without fully understanding the subsidy structure or the beneficiaries. He also pointed to the timing of the naira’s floating, noting that Nigeria was heavily reliant on imported fuel, with prices tied to the naira’s value at the time.

“This government lacks ideas,” he continued. “Sadly, none of the officials appointed by the president seem competent. I feel for Nigerians. After enduring the challenges of Buhari’s administration, the situation we now face is catastrophic. There is no compassion for the Nigerian people.”

The NNPP national secretary further lamented the president’s tendency to appoint political allies rather than qualified technocrats, and warned that Nigerians would continue to suffer unless Tinubu sought help from experienced political administrators.

He added, “They should consider seeking advice from Dr. Goodluck Jonathan on how he managed to maintain the naira at ₦200 to the dollar before the APC came to power. They should go and beg him for help.”
