The healthcare system in Ondo State has reached a critical point, with no functional ambulances currently available in government hospitals.
Observations by Starnews NG indicate that this development has sparked widespread concern among residents and healthcare professionals, who are urging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take immediate action to resolve the issue.
Hospitals across the state have become shadows of their former selves, with a severe dearth of doctors, nurses, and essential staff severely affecting their productivity.
Under former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, Ondo State was recognised for its healthcare advancements, particularly through initiatives such as the Mother and Child programme, which provided affordable care for women and children.
Even during the tenure of the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the health sector, while facing challenges, maintained a level of functionality.
However, since Governor Aiyedatiwa assumed office following Akeredolu’s death, the situation appears to have worsened significantly.
Healthcare professionals in the state have expressed grave concerns over the absence of ambulances, which are critical for responding to emergencies.
The inability to provide prompt medical transport puts patients at severe risk, especially in life-threatening situations.
“We are facing an unprecedented challenge,” said a senior medical officer at one of the state hospitals, who wished to remain anonymous.
“Without ambulances, our ability to provide timely care is severely compromised. The government must intervene immediately.”
Adding to the urgency is the rising cost of living, which has made access to healthcare increasingly difficult for the average citizen. The high price of essential drugs and medical services, compounded by the economic situation, has placed significant financial strain on many residents. For those struggling to afford basic necessities, the deteriorating healthcare system only exacerbates their plight.

Residents have expressed disappointment, comparing the current state of healthcare to the more stable services available under previous administrations. Many are calling for urgent reforms to prevent further decline and restore public confidence in the state’s healthcare system.
