RSIEC Defies Police, Affirms Local Government Election Will Hold in Rivers

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has insisted that the local government elections scheduled for today, October 5, 2024, will proceed as planned, despite opposition from the police.

Earlier, the police had cited a judicial directive, stating that they would not provide security for the elections.

However, in a statement issued late Friday, RSIEC reaffirmed that the elections will go ahead, regardless of police involvement. “For the avoidance of doubt, we emphasize unequivocally that the 5th October 2024 Local Government Council Elections in Rivers State will be held as scheduled, and there is no going back,” the statement read, signed by RSIEC’s Commissioner for Civil Education/Public Affairs, Tobin Tamunotonye.

Tamunotonye asserted that RSIEC has the legal authority to conduct the elections, referencing the RSIEC LAW of 2018, the 1999 Constitution, and a ruling by Hon. Justice I.P.C. Igwe of the Rivers State High Court delivered on September 4, 2024.
