Just In: Ondo Youths Protest, Demand REC’s Removal

Youths under the aegis of Ondo Youth Vanguard staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ondo State, expressing concerns over the upcoming election.

The protesters, in large numbers, carried placards with messages like “Ondo REC must be changed”, “Our election must count”, and “Ondo is not Edo”.

Leader of the group, Ijanusi Olawale, stated that their protest was apolitical and peaceful, aimed at highlighting issues they believe could compromise the election.

Olawale claimed they had received reports that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, was involved with political parties in the state, a move they fear would jeopardise the election’s fairness.

“We’ve been hearing rumours that the REC is engaging with certain political parties. Whether it’s APC, PDP, or Labour Party, she must stop or be replaced to ensure a free and fair election,” he warned.

“Our votes must count because Ondo is not Edo State,” he added.

Responding, INEC’s Administrative Secretary, Mr Abiodun Amosun, commended the youths for their peaceful protest, noting that such actions are a democratic right. He assured them that INEC was committed to a transparent election.

Amosun added that any allegations against the REC would have to be addressed at the national level, as REC appointments are made in Abuja.
