Lagos driver cheats death as truck overturns

A driver, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, narrowly escaped death on Thursday when a 40-foot container toppled over in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, the incident occurred around 5 p.m.

Taofiq reported that a black Toyota Jeep, bearing the license plate AAA 144 GU, was involved in the accident, but fortunately, the driver emerged unscathed.

In contrast, the driver of the truck transporting the container suffered serious injuries.

Taofiq described the event: “A significant accident took place today near the Second Gate, heading toward Mile 2, involving a fully loaded truck that overturned while attempting to navigate a turn at high speed. The truck narrowly missed colliding with a black Toyota Jeep, registration number AAA 144 GU.

“The truck driver, who was severely injured, was promptly rescued by LASTMA officers and transported to Apapa General Hospital for urgent medical care.

“Remarkably, the driver of the Toyota Jeep escaped without injury, despite his vehicle almost being crushed by the fallen container.”

In response to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki emphasized the importance of safety for truck drivers on the roads.

Bakare-Oki, speaking through Taofiq, expressed his sympathy for the injured truck driver and underscored the necessity for increased caution among truck operators, particularly when handling large and heavy loads.

“LASTMA is dedicated to ensuring the safety of all road users and will persist in enforcing traffic regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future,” Taofiq concluded.
