The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has reported that ten communities in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State have been displaced due to severe flooding caused by heavy rains.
Aliyu Shehu-Kafindagi, Head of Operations at NEMA’s Sokoto Office, disclosed this information during a joint assessment visit to the affected areas on Wednesday.
He stated that the flood, which occurred between September 17 and 22, rendered over 2,000 people homeless, forcing them to seek refuge in safer locations.
“The flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall combined with increased water levels from the River Niger, submerging several communities in the process,” Shehu-Kafindagi said.
The impacted communities include Kunda, Dala-Maidawa, Dala-Tudu, Dala-Mairuwa, Ishe-Mairuwa, Kwarkusa, Kurmudi, Tugar Maigani, Tukur Cika, Uguwar Gwada, Uguwar Wakili, and Gundu.
Most of the displaced individuals are fishermen who have also lost vast expanses of farmland, with crops such as rice, maize, millet, beans, and guinea corn now submerged.
During the assessment, NEMA identified an Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camp at Tudun Faila Primary School, which is currently providing shelter for more than 300 people.
