Varsity lecturer, Alkali languishes in DSS custody over 3 weeks, Adeyanju alleges

After 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters were granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja, one of their lawyers, Deji Adeyanju, raised concerns over the detention of Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering at Baze University.

Dr. Alkali has reportedly been in the custody of the Department of State Security, DSS, for three weeks, allegedly due to his support for the protests.

Recall that the Bola Tinubu-led government had arraigned 10 young people detained in several locations, including Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, for engaging in the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.

The allegations, which have been widely denounced as fabricated, include treasonable felony, a major offence that might result in harsh punishments.

The defendants appeared before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja and pleaded not guilty to the six charges brought against them.

Legal representation for the accused had been distributed among numerous well-known lawyers. Abubakar Marshal represents the first through fourth defendants, Hamza defends the fifth defendant, Deji Adeyanju represents the sixth through eighth defendants, and Ahmed Abdulrahman represents the ninth defendant.

On the detained Lecturer, Adeyanju said: “Dr. Abubakar Alkali, Senior Lecturer, Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Baze University was abducted by DSS three weeks ago and taken to Sokoto State for supporting the #EndBadGovernance protest. He has been in custody since then.
