Concerned citizens in Sokoto have called on religious leaders to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims regarding the rise in banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes in the state, particularly those targeting the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Matawalle.
Recall that the minister had recently reassured the people of Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and the entire North West region that security forces are committed to eradicating banditry and restoring peace in the area.
Malam Umar Shehu, a resident of Mabera Mujaya in Sokoto metropolis, told our correspondent that recent comments made by a Sokoto-based cleric linking the minister to banditry and alleging his association with criminal groups were unwarranted.
Shehu emphasized that religious leaders should verify facts and seek clarity before making such damaging statements.
He noted that clerics are seen as custodians of integrity and wisdom, with a duty to provide guidance and mentorship to the community.
He further argued that maturity and respect should guide the actions of esteemed religious leaders, adding that the use of derogatory language and unwarranted accusations against those in authority undermines their moral leadership.
In a similar vein, Alhaji Muktar Aliyu commended the minister for his ongoing efforts in combating banditry and kidnapping, recalling the impact Matawalle made during his tenure as governor of Zamfara State.
Aliyu urged the public to support the minister’s efforts with constant prayers as the military ramps up operations to ensure the safety of citizens across the region.
“I will be on the ground in the North West with the CDS and other military chiefs to lead our brave men and women in uniform”.
“I also call on residents of the. northwest to remain vigilant and cooperate with the security forces as the Federal Government is all out to protect the lives and properties of all citizens.” Says the minister.
“The security and well-being of the people remain the federal government’s top priority,” the minister stated while addressing troops in Sokoto.
