Tragedy struck late yesterday on the Akure-Ondo road near Olokunta community in Akure, Ondo State capital, when a Toyota collided with a bicycle, killing two Federal Polytechnic, Ile Oluji students instantly.
The victims, who were on the bicycle, were pronounced dead at the scene. Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response, Prince Oriade Wellington Adebawo, arrived within five minutes with other road users for a rescue mission, but unfortunately, the students could not be saved.
Adebawo expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and condemned the reckless driving responsible for the tragedy. He urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and exercise greater caution on the roads to avoid such fatal accidents.
In a statement, Adebawo highlighted the urgent need for drivers to remain vigilant and adopt necessary safety measures to prevent avoidable accidents.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC) Ondo State Axis, has also expressed profound sadness over the loss. The statement, signed by Comr. Oluwarotimi Tobiloba Joshua (Chairman), Comr. Oluwanishola Ajibola (Secretary General), and Comr. Kehinde Blessing (Public Relations Officer), extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and classmates of the deceased.
“This is a devastating blow to the student community of Ondo State. The untimely loss of these students serves as a grim reminder of the fragility of life,” the statement read. “Chukwu Athanasius and Oladokun Oyindamola were more than just students; they were individuals with dreams and potential cut short far too soon.”
The NANS statement concluded by emphasising the preciousness of life and the right to safety and peace, while extending deepest condolences to the bereaved families, hoping they find solace in the enduring memory of their loved ones.
