Seven individuals were on Tuesday, killed in a suspected attack by armed herdsmen in Naka community, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
Recall that six people were reported dead and several others injured following two separate attacks by armed herdsmen on the Iwari and Olegahbane communities in Agatu Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State.
The attack also resulted in several residents sustaining injuries, and many others fled their homes in fear of further violence.
Gwer West LGA is known for frequent attacks by armed herdsmen, who have previously targeted both communities and road users on the deteriorated Makurdi-Naka Road.
A local resident, speaking anonymously, revealed that prior to Tuesday’s assault, the herders had been damaging crops by allowing their cattle to graze freely on farmlands.
The attackers reportedly arrived on motorbikes around 5 a.m., opening fire on homes and causing chaos as they forced residents from their sleep.
He said, “the sound of gun shot at about 5am woke the people and forced them out of their homes. And as they tried to escape they were gunned down by the invaders.
“Seven persons who could not escape were gruesomely killed while some others sustained injuries.
“As we speak the people are fleeing their homes and the community for fear of a repeat of the attack which was completely unprovoked.”
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, stated that she had not yet received details about the incident.
