The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Medical Centre has issued an important advisory to all members of the university community regarding the recent outbreak of Monkey Pox in various parts of Africa, including Nigeria. This advisory was issued on Friday, 23rd August 2024, and emphasizes the need for vigilance and adherence to health guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of university members.
Monkey Pox is a viral disease related to smallpox. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected animals or humans. It can be transmitted via respiratory droplets, body fluids, or contaminated materials, making it highly contagious. The symptoms of Monkey Pox include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, eventually forming scabs. These symptoms can be serious, and it is crucial to recognise them early for prompt treatment.
To protect yourself and others from the virus, the University of Lagos Medical Centre advises avoiding close contact with individuals who have Monkey Pox-like rashes. Practising good hygiene is also essential, including regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitizers. If you are caring for someone who is ill, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) is strongly recommended. Additionally, it is important not to share personal items such as clothing, towels, or sleep beside someone who has Monkey Pox.
The centre advises: “If you or someone you know develops symptoms of Monkey Pox, it is vital to seek medical attention immediately. You should visit the University of Lagos Medical Centre or the nearest health facility as soon as possible. To prevent spreading the virus, you should isolate yourself from others and report any symptoms to the University of Lagos Medical Centre through the provided helplines.”
