Cletus Gandu, a 40-year-old unemployed man, admitted to stealing two tubers of yam out of hunger when he appeared in the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, on Wednesday.
Charged with criminal trespass and theft by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gandu confessed, “Hunger pushed me to steal yam on two occasions. I beg for leniency.”
The presiding judge, Michael Bawa, accepted Gandu’s guilty plea and postponed sentencing until August 6, ordering Gandu to be remanded in custody.
NSCDC Prosecutor Marcus Audu reported that Alice Daniel filed the complaint on July 15, revealing that Gandu stole yams from her farm in Zonkwa twice.
Gandu’s actions violate sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
