The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) proceeded with its congresses in Rivers State despite court orders barring such activities.
On Friday, a State High Court in Port Harcourt, presided over by Justice Charles Wali, issued an interim order halting the PDP from holding congresses in the state. This followed an earlier suit filed by 11 aggrieved PDP members, where Justice Sobere Biambo also issued an order stopping the party from going ahead with the scheduled congresses.
Nonetheless, the PDP conducted congresses in the wards of the local government areas (LGAs) across the state on Saturday. Reports indicated that party members had gathered at their respective wards but were informed of the Friday court order halting the process. Despite this, some wards were later directed to continue with the congresses as planned. Congress activities were reported in various LGAs, including Emohua, Ikwerre, Khana, and Obio/Akpor.
As of press time, the PDP state leadership had not issued an official statement on the matter. However, a party leader in Emohua LGA confirmed that they received instructions to proceed with the congresses. Factional leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Martins Amaewhule, was reported to have participated in the congress. Notably, the congress was held in Ward 3 Ogbakiri, Ward 6 Ibaa, and other wards in Emohua LGA, with a significant turnout at Ward 14 Obio/Akpor.
