Nigerians in Canada are making significant strides in technology, sports, and health innovation, according to Ako Ufodike, Deputy Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism for Alberta, Canada.
Speaking at the National Diaspora Day Celebration and National Diaspora Merit Award, Ufodike praised the Nigerian community’s role in promoting cross-cultural sharing in Alberta and globally. The event’s theme, “Japa Phenomena and its Implications for National Development,” highlighted the increasing number of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
Ufodike recounted personal stories of friends and family who have pursued dreams overseas, noting their resilience and determination despite challenges. He emphasized that the Nigerian diaspora has enriched the social, economic, and cultural fabric of societies worldwide.
“Nigerians have consistently demonstrated resilience, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence – wherever they live around the world,” Ufodike said. He added that Alberta’s Nigerian community is vital to the province, with the government declaring October as Nigerian Heritage Month.
Ufodike reaffirmed Alberta’s commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment, valuing diversity and the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora. He stressed the importance of leveraging the skills and experiences of Nigerians abroad for international development and strengthening ties between Nigeria and Canada for mutual growth.
