The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) have initiated a campaign to eradicate corruption from Nigeria’s political arena.
During a three-day workshop on implementing behavioral approaches to curb political corruption, IPAC Chairman Yusuf Mamman Dantalle emphasized the importance of political parties focusing on development and improving citizens’ quality of life.
He stated, “The fight against corruption aligns with IPAC’s vision to consolidate and deepen democracy by ensuring a conducive environment for successful elections, political stability, and a peaceful electoral process in Nigeria.”
Dantalle highlighted that electoral integrity is crucial for a better Nigeria but is hindered by issues such as the monetization of elections, high nomination fees, and the buying of delegates.
He asserted, “We will continue to fight corruption in politics until it is eradicated.”
Prof. Ayo Omotayo, Director-General of NIPSS, pointed out that corruption affects every aspect of Nigeria’s existence and emphasized the need for behavioral change to address this issue.
He declared, “No more dirty politics. We are determined to change the narrative from ‘politics is a dirty game’ to ‘sanitized politics for a better society.’”
Omotayo noted that corruption weakens governance and institutional capacity, affecting public service quality.
He stressed that political parties are essential for democracy and the nation’s survival.
The project aims to reduce corruption through behavior-change campaigns in both the public and private sectors.
Dr. Judith-Ann Walker, Executive Director of the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), represented by Stanley Ukpai, lamented the decline in women’s political representation, attributing it to corruption. She said, “Corruption has been cited in several scholarly studies as a significant obstacle to women’s full participation in politics.”
The workshop aims to develop a training curriculum incorporating behavioral approaches to combat corruption in Nigeria.
