The Abia State government has authorized a N15,000 wage bonus for civil servants over the next three months, starting in July.
This decision was made 48 hours after the state signed a seven-point Memorandum of Understanding with organized labor last weekend to prevent a strike.
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, announced this in Umuahia, the state capital, during a press briefing on the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu emphasized Governor Otti’s dedication to workers’ welfare, stating that the governor has agreed to a total wage bonus of N45,000 over the three-month period.
“The wage award is part of the state government’s efforts to mitigate the economic challenges currently facing the country,” Kanu said.
Additionally, Kanu mentioned that the government will soon disburse annual leave allowances to civil servants on leave.
“We inherited unpaid leave allowances, but this will be resolved as Otti had committed to this even before meeting with organized labour,” he added.
He further clarified that civil servants will receive their leave allowances immediately upon taking their annual leave.
