Five fraudsters Jailed for money laundering, impersonation

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured convictions and sentences for five individuals in the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, presided over by Justice A.A. Okeke.

The convicted individuals are Justine Chikeleze Onyedikachukwu, David Udoka Okafor, Godwin Favour Udoh, Ifeanyi Franklin Ogobue, and Chinedu Mukolu Obed. They were arraigned on July 12, 2024, on separate charges of money laundering under Section 18 (2) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022) and impersonation under Section 22 (2) (iv) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition and Prevention Act 2022).

All defendants pleaded guilty to the charges. Following their pleas, prosecution counsels Okongwu Ebuka and Ridwan Alabi requested convictions.

Justice Okeke sentenced Onyedikachukwu to two months’ imprisonment for each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, his iPhone 12 and Samsung laptop were forfeited to the Federal Government.

Udoh was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for count one of money laundering and three months for count two of impersonation, with sentences running concurrently. His iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 11 were also forfeited to the Federal Government.

Udoh received a sentence of one month for each count, with sentences to run concurrently. His iPhone XS Max was ordered forfeited to the Federal Government.

Ogobue was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. His iPhone 12 Pro Max was also forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

During his trial, Obed pleaded “guilty” to the amended two counts of money laundering and impersonation. Though he was discharged on count one of money laundering, he was convicted on count two bordering on impersonation and sentenced to two months imprisonment.

His IPhone 12 Pro Max was forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

All the convicts bagged their imprisonment when they were arrested for internet offences. They were charged to court and convicted.
