The House of Representatives has announced that out of 240 public petitions submitted over the past year, only 40 have been resolved.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas revealed this in Abuja on Wednesday during the presentation of the one-year scorecard of the 10th House of Representatives.
He highlighted the importance of public petitions as a tool for addressing citizens’ grievances, noting that 40 cases have been closed while 200 remain under investigation.
Abbas also mentioned that 10 cases have been presented to the House for further deliberation, demonstrating the House’s dedication to addressing public concerns.
He emphasized the House’s role in conflict mediation, citing successful interventions such as the dialogue with the Nigerian Labour Congress, which led to the prompt call-off of a nationwide strike.
Additionally, Abbas pointed to the House’s efforts in resolving issues within the Nigerian Union of Teachers and the Nigerian Medical Association, helping to minimize disruptions in education and healthcare.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu also spoke, stating, “An open legislature is not just about engagement but about data-driven decision-making. As your representatives, we have a responsibility to understand the nation’s most immediate needs and address them accordingly. This requires a meticulous approach, utilizing data and prioritizing models that reflect the pulse of our nation.”
He added that openness and data-driven decision-making would ensure that legislative actions were tailored to the evolving needs of the people.
He commended the various committees and their respective leadership for their tireless efforts that contributed to the general success of the House.
