Ghanaian Chef Busted For Forging Guinness World Record Certificate in Marathon Cooking

Ebenezer Smith, known as Millennium Chef Smith, has been arrested and detained at La Police Station in Accra, Ghana for fabricating a Guinness World Record in marathon cooking.

Smith, a Ghanaian chef, claimed to set a new record with an 820-hour 25-minute cook-a-thon, starting February 1 and ending March 6, 2024, presenting a certificate to fans at a star-studded event at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.

Performers included Praye Tietia, Yaw Tog, Amerado, Kofi Jamar, and the Asakaa Boys.

During the press briefing, Smith remarked, “Today is a day I will forever remember. I am incredibly humbled and honored to stand before you as the Guinness World Record holder.”

However, Alina Polianskaya, a PR Executive from Guinness World Records, refuted the certificate’s validity to BBC Pidgin, stating, “No, this is not true at all.

“He does not hold the GWR title, and that certificate is not ours.”

The authentic longest cooking marathon record holder remains Alan Fisher of Ireland, who cooked for 119 hours 57 minutes in Japan, surpassing Nigeria’s Hilda Baci by 24 hours.

Shortly after announcing his false record, Smith and his manager were arrested for reportedly misusing sponsor funds, including a significant donation from the owner of Amadia Shopping Centre amounting to about 350,000 cedis.

The main sponsor of the cookathon Amadia Shopping Centre said Chef Smith and his team did not stick to their agreement.

The company offered the space and equipment for cookathon.

Lawyer representing Chef Smith Kofi Awoonor told a local TV station (TV3) on Tuesday night said the arrest was in connection with some disagreement with Chef Smith and his main sponsor for the cookathon.
