Nigeria has recorded a total of 2,102 suspected cholera cases and 63 deaths spanning 33 states and 122 local government areas as of June ending.
Jide Idris, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) disclosed these figures during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
He highlighted a case fatality rate of 3.0%, noting that Southern States such as Lagos, Bayelsa, Abia, Zamfara, Bauchi, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Rivers, and Delta account for about 90% of the cases.
Cholera, a highly contagious disease transmitted through contaminated food and water, has recently surged across multiple states in Nigeria due to Vibrio cholerae ingestion.
Idris outlined that the National Cholera Multisectoral Emergency Operation Centre has been activated, mobilizing a diverse team of experts to coordinate strategic responses.
The Centre conducts daily meetings and issues regular situation reports to stakeholders, ensuring efficient mobilization, harmonization, and distribution of resources to support affected states.
Key response areas encompass coordination, surveillance, case management, infection prevention and control, risk communication, community engagement, water sanitation and hygiene, vaccination logistics, and research. An Incidence Action Plan has been developed and is currently being implemented to streamline these efforts.
Idris stressed that these measures are crucial for enabling rapid communication, data analysis, and decision-making, optimizing resource deployment, enhancing surveillance capabilities, improving treatment for affected individuals, and intensifying public awareness and community engagement initiatives across the affected regions.
