The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called for mandatory drug testing of athletes before participating in tournaments to combat the growing problem of drug abuse among sportsmen and women.
Kayode Raji, NDLEA commander in Ondo State, emphasized this requirement during a sensitization workshop held in Akure over the weekend. The event, titled “Drug Abuse—Battling A Menace In Nigerian Sports,” was organized in collaboration with the Ondo chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
Raji expressed serious concerns about the rising influence of drug abuse in sports, noting its harmful effects on athletes’ careers and overall development. “Drugs have no place in sports. They undermine fair play and can lead to criminal activities,” he said, reaffirming the NDLEA’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free sporting environment. He also pledged support for those affected by drug abuse and highlighted the agency’s commitment to promoting a drug-free society.
Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, assured that the state government is committed to tackling drug use among athletes. Segun Giwa, SWAN chairman in Ondo State, urged sports journalists to actively educate athletes about the dangers of drug abuse. “Let’s work together to foster a culture of drug-free sports in Nigeria—one that values hard work, dedication, and fair competition,” Giwa emphasized.
The workshop concluded with a unified pledge to protect the integrity of sports by eradicating drug abuse among athletes and fans alike.
