An Ajah-based cobbler, Oluwaseun Jacobs, has been arraigned and remanded in prison for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Lagos State.
In a press statement on Tuesday, Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer Mayowa Adejobi reported that the suspect committed the offense at Chevron Roundabout, Lekki, on June 22, 2024.
Describing the assault on the officer as “reprehensible and grievous,” Adejobi noted that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, expressed dismay over the incident.
“The assailant, 47-year-old Oluwaseun Jacobs, a cobbler based in Ajah, has been apprehended and arraigned in court on a three-count charge, including assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace,” said the force spokesperson.
The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2024, for a hearing, with the suspect currently remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending further legal proceedings.
Adejobi stated that the IGP assured all officers of full support in situations where their rights are violated, emphasizing that the safety of officers is paramount and must be balanced with the fundamental rights of citizens. He reiterated that the NPF would not tolerate any form of assault on its officers and would ensure those responsible face the full extent of the law.
He urged citizens to respect the police’s role in maintaining law and order and to cooperate and support efforts to create a safer and more secure society for all.
