Four individuals have been handed death sentences by hanging for their involvement in armed robbery, murder, and conspiracy. This verdict was delivered by the Ekiti State High Court in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday.
The convicted individuals, namely Ogunleye Sola, Adebayo Ebenezer, Lasisi Afeez, and Ojo Oba, were found guilty of committing these crimes on May 29, 2017, at Oyan Orete Camp, Ijan Ekiti. The incident involved a violent robbery where the camp occupants were held at gunpoint, resulting in the murder of Olasunkanmi Ramon. Additionally, Alhaji Adeleye Usman was attacked with a cutlass.
According to the charges, these actions violated Section 6(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as well as Sections 319(1) and 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap.C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The Director of Public Prosecutions for Ekiti State, Julius Ajibare, presented the case with five witnesses and seven exhibits to substantiate the charges. The defendants, represented by their counsel Chris Omokhafe and Oluwaseun Banji, put forward their defense and called two witnesses.
In the judgment, Justice Olukayode Ogundana ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven all charges against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. Accordingly, he sentenced them to death by hanging for conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder. Additionally, they were sentenced to life imprisonment for the offense of attempted murder.
