Peter Obi of the Labour Party expressed his concern over President Bola Tinubu’s fall during the Democracy Day celebration, urging Nigerians to refrain from mocking the president.
“I was saddened to hear about President Tinubu’s unfortunate fall today,” Mr. Obi tweeted on Wednesday. “I wish him well. We gain nothing by gloating over an accident that could happen to any of us.”
Having contested against Mr. Tinubu in the 2023 Presidential election, Mr. Obi called on citizens to maintain focus on issues that can bring about a new Nigeria.
“May this moment remind us of our shared humanity and the importance of compassion, empathy, and unity as we strive for a brighter future for our nation,” Mr. Obi added.
Mr. Tinubu slipped while attempting to ascend the parade truck on Wednesday, prompting reactions across Nigeria. However, presidential media aide Dada Olusegun reassured the public that Mr. Tinubu was fine, describing the incident as a “minor misstep and not a concern.”
“President Tinubu is not invincible. He is human like all of us,” said Bayo Onanuga, another media aide. “President Biden and even the younger Barack Obama have had slips in the past. Political leaders are human beings. Slipping should not overshadow the significance of Democracy Day.”
Like Mr. Obi, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party also expressed sympathy for Mr. Tinubu and inquired about his well-being.
