A violent clash erupted on Monday at the NTA Park in Jos, Plateau State, resulting in severe injuries to four labor union representatives.
The altercation unfolded amidst ongoing nationwide strikes as transporters from a privately owned company clashed with members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) enforcement team. The incident occurred on Yakubu Gowon Way, where the transport company operates, opposite NTA Jos.
Tensions escalated when representatives from organized labor unions, tasked with ensuring compliance with strike directives, approached the park to engage with the management of the transportation firm, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Comrade Sunday Ayodele, the Vice Chairman of NLC leading the team, stated, “Upon our arrival at the park’s gate, the park’s rowdies began hurling stones at us, mistaking us for members of the NURTW.”
“Unknown to us, there is a pending dispute between the private transport company and NURTW Jos. And the touts in the park simply descended on our members. Before could understand the reason for the attack, the touts injured 4 members of NLC.
“It took the intervention of the security agencies for calm to be restored at the park. We had to withdraw our enforcement team from the park to allow peace to reign in the areas.
“Meanwhile, we conveyed our men to the hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention.”
