Just In: Gunmen abduct senior matron

A senior matron working at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, was abducted by armed individuals on Tuesday.

Augustine Duru, the chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) UNTH chapter, confirmed the incident to reporters in Enugu.

According to Mr. Duru, the senior matron, whose name is being withheld for security reasons, was kidnapped from the same location where a medical doctor was abducted several weeks ago within the teaching hospital premises.

“When the association got information about the kidnap, we contacted hospital security, who confirmed that it was true. MDCAN leadership then mobilised the resident doctors and nurses/midwives associations as well as the security to a meeting with the chief medical director (CMD), Prof Obinna Onodugo, on the matter,” Mr Duru explained.

He added, “We held good deliberations on how to remedy the situation and ensure our own abducted colleague is released, as well as make necessary reports to the authorities concerned.

“What was discussed or deliberated in the meeting is not what is meant for the public since it is a security matter. However, we are on it.”

A source said the incident happened between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

An SUV vehicle allegedly belonging to the abducted senior matron was seen abandoned at the spot of the incident in the hospital with bullet-perforated glass on the front passenger side.

The police spokesman in Enugu, Dan Ndukwe, did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
