A 42-year-old businesswoman named Blessing Vincent appeared before the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing charges of issuing a dud cheque amounting to N517,440.
Vincent was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating during the arraignment.
Inspector Chidi Leo, serving as the Prosecutor, stated that the case was reported by Samson Edward from Tropical Hotel Barnawa Kaduna at the Barnawa Police Station on February 18.
According to Leo, the defendant had booked a room at a daily rate of N15,680 on January 16 but failed to settle the accommodation bill since then.”
He said that the money accumulated to N517, 440 and on February 17, she dishonestly issued him a cheque knowing there was no money in the account.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The defendant, however, denied committing the offences.
Rita Daniel, counsel to the defendant, applied for her bail on liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, however, gave bail to the defendant in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said one of the sureties must be a Grade Level 10 officer in the federal civil service or a pastor with proof.
Emmanuel said the defendant should return to the hotel and should write an application to maintain peace.
He adjourned the case until April 22 for hearing.
