President Bola Tinubu has launched the Expatriate Employment Levy Project, EEL, with a view to domesticating labour and technology.
Initiated by the Ministry of Interior, the project seeks to impose contributions on Nigerian companies that employ expatriates to work for them.
The project, according to the Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, will be operated on Public-Private Partnership model, with the Ministry of Interior as the guarantor, and the Nigeria Immigration Service as the implementing agency.
He explained that the project would also enhance revenue generation, improve nationalisation and indigenisation of labour among the youth, adding that it will ensure that companies employ only Nigerians, except on jobs that Nigerians lack expertise.
The Minister said the project would equally balance employment opportunities between Nigerians and foreigners, as well as close wage gabs between them by making it attractive to hire Nigerians.
The Chairman, Senator Committee on Interior, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, had said the project would encourage Nigerians to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise to earn the confidence of foreign investors.
- While launching the handbook of the project in Abuja, President Tinubu described it as a game-changer that could reduce the effects of ongoing brain-drain in the country, and give Nigerians the confidence that things will change for the better.
He commended the Ministry of Interior for the initiative to re-tool and re-engineer the finances of Nigeria to make growth the hallmark of the administration.
