Six School Children with a head teacher and a driver were reportedly kidnapped on Monday in Ekiti State, Starnews NG has learnt.
A traditional Chief who pleaded anonymity said the victims were students and staff of a Nursery/Primary School (name withheld) in Emure, Ekiti State.
According to him, “they were kidnapped after their school bus was intercepted in Eporo Ekiti, at a location that shares boundary with Ondo state.
Starnews NG contacted Mr. Abutu Sunday on Monday, the Ekiti State PPRO, but the phone call did not go through as his number was not connecting as at the time of filing this report.
On Tuesday morning, we tried calling his phone again but it rang out three times. H didn’t pick up. He is yet to respond to the text message sent to his phone as at 2:30 PM this afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government has confirmed the abduction of students, teachers, and a driver in the Emure-Ekiti area of the state but vowed to ensure the victims are rescued. It was gathered that the number of abducted students were six and not 14. It was also confirmed that three teachers and their bus driver were involved.
But hours after the incident, the Ekiti State Government called on residents of the state not to despair as security has been stepped up to rescue them.
“The Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has urged the citizens of the state not to despair over Monday’s kidnapping of some school pupils and their teachers in Emure- Ekiti, assuring that efforts are on to get the children and their teachers rescued,” the Tuesday statement from the Ekiti State Government read.
The incident happened at about 5 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2024, along Eporo-Ekiti in the Emure area of the state.
Starnews NG reports that the incident occurred the same day gunmen killed two traditional rulers in Oke-Ako in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
Oyebanji, in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, described the abduction as callous and unacceptable, saying nothing would be spared in the efforts to rescue them.
