Sunshine Stars sack Edith Agoye as head coach ‘to avoid relegation battle’

The Ondo government has announced the sacking of Edith Agoye as the head coach of Sunshine Stars FC.

According to NAN, Bamidele Ologunloluwa, the state’s commissioner of sports and youth development, announced the sack at a meeting with the team’s coaching crew in Akure on Monday.

Agoye was fired alongside three of his assistants — Akin Olowokere, Banjo Adepoju and Folorunsho Stephen — and they were all at the meeting.

Ologunloluwa said the sack came after a poor run of form and several ultimatums given to the coaching crew by the management.

The commissioner said he would not wait until the team began to fight a relegation battle.

He said the responsibility given to the team has not been met, even with all the support given to the coaching crew.

“It’s not going to be business as usual; I don’t want to fight relegation anymore. It is not about witch-hunting. Once a technical crew is not performing, the job is about hiring and firing, like you know,” he said.

Sunshine Stars are in shambolic form, with just one win from the last seven league games.

The team is currently 12th on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) log with 22 points from 19 matches. The club is just four points above the relegation zone.
