Property worth millions of naira destroyed in Ile-Ife inferno

Osogbo—Property worth hundreds of millions of naira was reportedly destroyed by fire around Lagere area of Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The incident, which started at a popular filling station on Tuesday, reportedly spread to other properties surrounding the station, including a student hostel, a shopping complex and a commercial bank.

While no casualty was recorded, property worth hundreds of millions of naira was destroyed and some people sustained injuries.

Explaining the reason behind the spread, yesterday, Osun Fire Service spokesperson, Adekunle Ibrahim, said a five-ton gas cylinder behind the filling station exploded when the fire incident started.

The explosion, according to Adekunle, wreaked havoc to adjoining properties around the station, which include a shopping complex, a commercial bank and other corporate offices.

“The cause of the fire cannot be ascertained at the time the team of fire investigators led by the Director of Fire Service, Mr Olubunmi Oyelami, went to the scene of the incident, yesterday for on-the-spot assessment to the level of damage done by the inferno as well as the cause of the fire.
