United Kingdom Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak was confronted with humiliating boos and calls to resign as he left a cafe in Stockport this morning.
Sunak was meeting local Conservative Party members in the Hazel Grove constituency, where the Tories are defending a 4,423 majority over the Liberal Democrats.
Several people on the street across the road from the cafe shouted boos as he left and called on Mr Sunak to resign and “get out.”
The Prime Minister then scurried into a Land Rover escorted by police.
The meeting’s location was not disclosed to the public, strongly suggesting that the hecklers were passing members of the public, rather than activists targeting the gathering.
Interviewed by Manchester Evening News, one man said he had heckled the PM “because they’ve broken the country, haven’t they? Public services crumbling, health service is crumbling, economy crumbling. We’ve had enough of them.”
While on his visit to north-west England, Mr Sunak also failed to condemn remarks by a local Conservative MP who had said that children struggling in his town were “products of crap parents.”
James Daly, who represents Bury North, sparked outrage last week when he insulted parents in his constituency during an interview with the i newspaper.
Asked if he agreed with the remark, Mr Sunak evaded the question and said: “No-one wants to see any child grow up in poverty. I certainly don’t.
“The best way we can help families is to make sure that those parents are in great jobs and are well paid and that we are cutting their taxes. That is exactly what we are doing, starting from tomorrow.”
