Akingboye Proposes Development Plan For Ondo Transformation

By Doris Israel Ijeoma

Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, a former aspirant in Ondo’s 2020 elections, says he believes that Ondo State possesses abundant natural resources that, if properly utilized, could make it the wealthiest in Africa.

Akingboye highlighted that Agbabu holds the world’s second-largest bitumen deposit, estimated at about 42.47 billion tonnes.

Additionally, Araromi in Ilaje LGA is rich in maritime resources that could significantly benefit the entire South West Nigeria region.

Despite federal approval, Port Ondo in Araromi remains neglected, offering immense potential for development.

Moreover, sand in Ilaje LGA is suitable for glass production and could support successful coconut planting.

Akingboye proposed developing the Araromi area into a ‘Sunshine Smart City,’ potentially generating billions and easing congestion in Lagos through improved road networks.

Akingboye criticized past administrations for not tapping into these resources and overly relying on federal allocations, limiting infrastructural and economic growth.

He urged the current government to take concrete steps beyond signing agreements, involving local and international investors to boost Ondo State’s economy.

While acknowledging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s actions in dissolving illegal LGAs & LCDAs caretaker committees, Akingboye emphasized the importance of conducting free, fair, and credible elections through ODIEC, scheduled for February 6th, 2024.

He urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to ensure impartial facilitation, securing a lasting legacy for the state’s governance.

“I commend Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s courageous actions in dissolving the illegal LGAs & LCDAs Caretaker committees following court rulings, it is suggested that a complete dissolution should be accompanied by the organization of free, fair and credible elections through ODIEC as per the previously released timetables.

“It is noteworthy that these elections are slated for February 6th, 2024 and all participating political parties have been duly accredited.

“I urge the governor to facilitate democratic advancements in the local government areas (LGAs/LCDAs) impartially, thereby solidifying his legacy and legitimacy for perpetuity”, he said
