The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, has dissolved the Elders’ Council of the party in the local government area.
During a meeting held on 30th October, 2023 at the Party Secretariat in Igbara-Oke, at around 10:30am, the party Executives led by its Acting Chairman, Hon. Fasore Oladipo Sunday nullified the activities of the Elders’ Council in Ifedore local government area.
According to a statement released by the party executives, they accused the elders led by Dr. Lawrence Ibukun, of illegality and abuse of power, alleging that they were making a move to install one Hon. Afolabi Bakare as the substantive Chairman of the party without a proper congress and notice of the Party Executives.
They party explained that the decision of the elders contravene the provision of the constitution of the party, and therefore passed ‘a vote of NO confidence’ on the Elders council pending the intervention of the State Executive of the party.
The Acting Chairman, then called for peace and harmony within the party, emphasizing that the constitution of the party does not provide or state the role of Elders Council, adding that the party’s apex body at the local government level, remains the local government area caucus, which is headed by the party chairman.
He cited section 17(1) (a) (1) 1 of the party’s constitution which provides for the composition, establishment and functions of the local government area caucus, noting that in view of this no elders of the party has the power to remove or appoint any party Executive except by through a congress election conducted by the party in present of INEC officer and security agencies.
Also, he urged the executives of the party to unanimously inform the State Executive and National Executive of the party for the unconstitutional and arbitrary use of power of some self selected people in the local government, claiming to be Elders of the party that want to bring anarchy and cause discomfort among the party.
The acting Chairman also implored party members to forge ahead and plan towards winning the forthcoming election.
