Why Christians Should Not Celebrate Halloween

By Pastor Akinrinlola Olumide

Halloween is a celebration observed in many countries on 31st of October every year. According to wikipedia, it is a time dedicated to remember the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed by some Western Christians and many non-Christians around the world. It is believed that Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots.

Although this article is not looking at the history or practice of Halloween. It is written to spell out the reasons Christians should not celebrate it.

Some people viewed Halloween celebration as a fun, unfortunately, the practice is against God‘s commandment and bliblical doctrines. Halloween is based on false beliefs about the dead and invisible spirits, or demons.

Why Christians Should Not Celebrate Halloween!

1. There is no connection or communication between the dead and the living according to Ecclesiastes 9:5.

That verse of the bible says, “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten”.

This scripture suggests that once someone is dead, he doesn’t know anything again, let alone having the ability to communicate with the living. Many people who believed they’re communicating with their dead ones are actually communicating with demons who are agents of Lucifer. A dead man or woman does not know anything again. So why devoting efforts to contact the dead?

Satan is very crafty. If he can deceive Adams and Eve in his craftiness, I am not surprised if he is deceiving many Christians across the world with this type of belief. Or if not satanic, how can people believe that their dead relatives can still visit and communicate with them.

2. God says we should not consult the dead (familiar spirit) or practice witchcraft by any means according to the book of Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Let’s read through: Deuteronomy 18:10-12. “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”

God said in that verses of the bible that the act of consulting the dead (familiar spirit) is an abomination unto him. This is part of the reasons Christians shouldn’t practice or celebrate Halloween. If God does not approve our practice of consulting the dead, why should Christians involve themselves in Halloween?

3. The Bible says we must not provoke God to jealousy by fellowshipping with the devil according to 1st Corinthians 10: 20-22 which says, “But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

We all know that our God is a jealous God and does not share His glory with anyone. The act of celebrating dead ones or worshiping them is sinful. Doing so means that we are giving God’s glory to the Ghosts and His praise to Idols which He commanded us not to do. (Isaiah 42:8).

4. Like I wrote in the introduction of this message that Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which is rooted in paganism. So what fellowship does a Christian have with paganism?

The book of 2 Corinthians 6:14 says that, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?

So my dear brothers and sisters, it is not too late for you to repent now. It is your fault if you miss Heaven because this message is another grace for your repentance . I just told you!

Say : Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sin. Forgive me. (confess your sin) I accept you today as my Lord and Saviour, come into my life and remain there forever. Amen.
