Nigeria is currently gripped by anxiety, suspense, and palpable tension as the nation awaits a pivotal judgment from the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) regarding the challenges to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election victory. The judgment is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, and it has the entire country on edge.
According to LEADERSHIP Newspaper, Umar Mohammed Bangari, the Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, which hosts the election petitions tribunal, has officially confirmed September 6, 2023, as the date for delivering the judgment on the presidential poll.
During the pre-hearing report on the petitions and the presentation of the trial schedule, the tribunal consolidated the petitions submitted by various political parties. It also made the decision to reserve judgment on the petitions filed by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to deliver them on the same day as Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
In an official statement, the court announced that these judgments would be televised live by interested television stations to promote transparency and openness for the public to follow. Access to the court premises will be strictly regulated, with accreditation required for entry. Members of the public are advised to watch the proceedings from their television sets.
In response to this development, the Labour Party expressed optimism that the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal would favor its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, conveyed confidence that the judgment would align with the will of the people and uphold the mandate expressed during the February 25 election.
“The mandate freely expressed on February 25 will be returned to the rightful winner of the election.”
