Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State and federal politician representing Abia North in the national assembly, has shared his thoughts about the unfolding coup in the Republic of Niger. Soldiers in Niger have claimed that they removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power. They took this action after armed troops previously blocked the presidential palace in Niamey, the capital of one of the world’s most unstable nations.
Kalu responded to this news on his verified Facebook page. He mentioned that Nigeria is close by and shouldn’t participate in ECOWAS’ plan of military invasion. He suggested that if the United States, France, and the United Kingdom want to wage war in Niger, they should send their own troops. While Nigeria can provide financial support, it shouldn’t send its soldiers to another country to fight.
According to him; “Nigeria is in our backyard, and Nigeria should not join ECOWAS’ plan of military invasion.” If the United States, France, and the United Kingdom wish to go to war in Niger, they can send their own troops. Nigeria can provide financial assistance, but not troops. No Nigerian soldier should die in another country as a result of war.”
He continued; “Fighting a war in the Niger Republic is not necessary because no one knows who is sponsoring it or how it will end,” he continued. Nigeria, the United States, and France have the option of intervening in Niger by giving them between one and six months to transfer power to a new government. There is nothing wrong with leaving ECOWAS if it would cost Nigeria the peace it requires. Nigeria is a sovereign nation, and its people’s concerns are paramount.”
