Former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, found himself in a challenging situation as he appeared before the Senate for screening on Monday.
Amidst drama in the Senate over his nomination, some lawmakers raised concerns about his past refusal to honor invitations from various committees in the 9th Senate and 9th House of Representatives, led by Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila, respectively.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe submitted a petition, urging Senate President Godswill Akpabio to suspend Keyamo’s screening until he recognized that the Senate had the authority to summon and question any Minister and their Ministry.
As tensions escalated, the Senate moved into a closed-door plenary to address the situation. Upon resuming the screening process, Festus Keyamo took the opportunity to extend his apologies to the lawmakers for his actions during the previous administration under President Buhari.
Keyamo’s apology served as a significant step towards reconciliation, acknowledging the importance of parliamentary oversight and cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government.
