Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has refuted claims suggesting that the LP has endorsed any candidate in preparation for the upcoming Edo 2024 gubernatorial elections.
Abure made this statement in Benin City, Edo State, following his two-day visit to express gratitude to the people of Edo State.
The LP chairman clarified that the internal conflict within the Edo state chapter has been resolved.
He further emphasized that the party welcomes individuals who are interested in joining their ranks.
“I would like to express my appreciation for the support given to Labour Party candidates during the 2023 general elections. Your support greatly facilitated our efforts. Despite our financial limitations, the press faithfully reported our progress due to your enthusiasm for a new Nigeria.”
“I embarked on this visit to extend my gratitude to everyone in Edo State for their support during the elections. I began by visiting Ward 3, Esan North East, where I met with party leaders. I want to thank them because, in my Ward, I emerged victorious in all the elections, including the Presidential and House of Assembly Elections, despite facing irregularities.”
“I feel a sense of duty to express my gratitude to everyone. The Labour Party secured 79% of the votes in the Presidential election in Edo State,” Abure affirmed.
He disclosed the establishment of a committee tasked with addressing the challenges facing the Labour Party in Edo State and finding resolutions.
Abure clarified, “I have already stated that our doors are open to our members, and I want to emphasize that I have not endorsed any candidate for the Edo 2024 governorship election.”
“The Labour Party will conduct competitive and transparent primaries to determine the candidate. Our disagreement with the PDP and APC stems from their lack of internal party democracy, which has resulted in the predicament we face today. As an emerging political party seeking to reshape the political landscape, we cannot engage in the same practices. It will be the members and delegates of the Labour Party who decide on the party’s candidate for the Edo 2024 election.”
“We convened this meeting to address the apparent disagreements among party officials during and after the general elections. I want to affirm that we have resolved these issues, and we now stand united as a party that will work in the best interests of our members in the forthcoming elections.”
