Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represents Anambra South Senatorial District, has taken a bold step to put an end to the Monday sit-at-home policy in his constituency.
This policy, initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is a form of protest against the continued detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
However, Senator Ubah believes that the sit-at-home is not in line with the wishes of the people and has therefore decided to take action.
During a meeting with vigilantes and community security watch operatives from Nnewi, Senator Ubah announced that the self-imposed sit-at-home policy would be abolished starting from Monday, July 3.
To demonstrate the safety of the people and encourage them to resume their regular activities on Mondays, the Senator plans to organize a road show across various markets and roads.
In addition to this announcement, Senator Ubah revealed that he has procured several security gadgets and equipment to enhance security operations in the Nnewi constituency and its surroundings.
These include CCTV cameras, patrol vans, motorcycles, walkie talkies, and wooden ‘osisi agaga’ from Nnewi evil forests.
The Senator emphasized the negative impact of the sit-at-home policy on businesses, commerce, and the economy in the region.
He highlighted the loss of job opportunities for the youth as a consequence of this policy.
Recognizing the importance of Monday for business and economic activities, Senator Ubah is determined to put an end to this situation.
To ensure the safety of traders and their goods during the Monday road show, the vigilantes have been instructed to strengthen security around major markets in the area.
The aim is to protect them from the threats posed by unknown gunmen.
Dr. Maduako Atuenyi, the President-General of Nnewi Town Union, also expressed his support for ending the sit-at-home policy.
He emphasized the negative impact on the local economy and announced that anyone who does not open their shop on Monday will have it locked by the community for a period of six months.
