Ondo: Catastrophe may befall PDP over choice of running mate – Erewa warns

A governorship aspirant in the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in Ondo State, Chief Godday Erewa, has said the decision by the party to ignore Ilaje Local Government in the choice of a running mate would be immensely catastrophic if not properly managed.

Starnews NG had reported that the candidate of the party, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) yesterday named Ikengboju Gboluga, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency as his running mate.

Reacting through an official statement he personally signed on Monday evening, Erewa accused the party and its candidate of deliberately ignoring Ilaje local government in choosing a running mate, adding, however, that such action has generated palpable tension and disenchantment; and ”if not properly managed, the consequences would be immensely catastrophic”, he said.

The statement read:

”The selection of a running mate to any candidate in a political contest is a crucial component of the electioneering process and could be instrumental in either boosting or hampering the electoral victory of a political party especially in an election that is bound to be fiercely contested.”

”Presumably, running mates are ordinarily expected not only to balance a candidate personality, inexperience or lack of character but more importantly, to provide geographical balance geared towards ensuring just and equitable representation.”

”Against this backdrop, it is quite confounding that the ilaje nation was deliberately neglected in the choice of a running mate for the PDP candidate. Are we saying that there is no one in ilaje nation to be so nominated by the PDP?”

”This decision to ignore us is generating palpable tension and disenchantment and if not properly managed, the consequences would be immensely catastrophic.

Signed

Godday Erewa, Ondo State PDP Governorship Aspirant in the just concluded primaries.
