The House of Representatives has raised concerns about the worsening security situation in Esan North-East and Esan South-East Federal Constituency of Edo State.
Lawmakers are urging the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to establish a military base in Uromi to tackle the growing threats of kidnappings, killings, and other crimes.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, a motion was brought forward by Henry Okojie, a lawmaker from Edo State, who pointed out that criminal activities in the region have become rampant.
He described a surge in cases of murder, armed robbery, rape, and cult-related violence, adding that security agencies are struggling to handle the situation.
Okojie explained that residents are living in fear as kidnappers and armed gangs operate without restraint.
He revealed that many victims have been killed, with some showing signs of organ harvesting.
Criminals are said to be active along the railway route from Uzea to Ugboha, Amedokhian, Udo, Eko-Ibadin, and Ubiaja to Ewohimi.
After a voice vote led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the House agreed to the motion and called for urgent security intervention.
Lawmakers directed security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the army, and the police, to launch an investigation into the worsening crisis.
The House also assigned its committees on defence, army, national security and intelligence, police, and legislative compliance to examine the issue and submit a report within four weeks to aid further action.
