The Niger State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged shooting of a resident by a police officer suspected to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident.
According to Afripost, the shooting reportedly took place in the early hours of Monday in the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer, who is attached to the Maitumbi Police Station, consumed a significant amount of alcohol before indiscriminately firing his rifle.
A resident identified as Sani, who was said to be asleep, was hit by a stray bullet and lost his life.
The officer allegedly attempted to shoot another individual, a tea vendor known as Mai Shayi, who managed to escape unharmed. Bullet casings were later discovered at the scene.
In response to the incident, Commissioner of Police Shuwala Danmamman instructed the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to track down and apprehend the officer involved.
Confirming the case, police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that authorities received a report of the shooting around 3 a.m. on March 10, 2025.
He assured that a full investigation is underway, adding, “The Commissioner of Police has ordered the DPO Maitumbi to identify the officer responsible and take necessary action.”
Abiodun further noted that the police would provide updates as the investigation continues.
