‘There is not much logistics to tackle insecurity in Ondo’— Police Chief laments

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Wilfred Afolabi, has expressed deep frustration over the significant logistical challenges that hinder law enforcement’s ability to combat rising insecurity in the region.

During an interactive session with members of the Correspondents Chapel in Akure, according the Nation Newspaper, Afolabi lamented, “There is not much logistics to tackle security challenges,” highlighting the urgent need for resources to effectively address the increasing sophistication of kidnapping and other crimes.

Afolabi attributed the rise in kidnapping activities to the “unchecked influx of people” into the state. He stated, “The rate at which people are migrating to the Sunshine State has worsened security challenges, especially as it relates to kidnapping.”

His remarks underscore the challenges posed by the lack of control over this migration, which has intensified the security landscape.

The police chief further elaborated on the evolving nature of kidnappings, saying, “Kidnapping is a prevalent crime in Ondo State. It is multidimensional.” He acknowledged that the Ondo Police Command is currently hindered by a lack of “modern hi-tech equipment and vehicles” necessary for tackling these crimes effectively. “What we rely on is to deploy personnel to comb the bush. It does not achieve much success,” he admitted, revealing that high-profile suspected kidnappers were apprehended only when he hired private trackers.

Afolabi emphasised the urgent need for better resources, stating, “We need vehicles, military drones, hi-tech binoculars, and a fuel dump” to bolster operational capabilities in the fight against crime.

He also pointed out that “neighborhood policing would achieve more success than state police,” indicating a shift in strategy that could enhance community safety.

On the recent Idanre-Akure crisis, Afolabi mentioned his proactive approach: “I created a buffer zone between the warring communities to check further breakdown of law and order.” His comments reflect a commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state, even amid significant challenges.
