Clinical lecturers begin indefinite strike over non-implementation of CONMESS

Medical consultants in South-West Nigeria have commenced an indefinite strike following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum over the non-payment of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for clinical lecturers in universities across the region.

The industrial action, declared by the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), South-West Zone, stems from the failure of relevant authorities to address the salary disparity between clinical lecturers in the region and their counterparts elsewhere.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr AbdulKareem Salawu, and Secretary, Dr Omotola Obajolowo, the association expressed frustration over the lack of progress despite the ultimatum issued on 13 January.

MDCAN urged vice-chancellors of the affected universities to urgently resolve the issue to avert further disruptions to medical education and healthcare delivery.

The association stressed the importance of fairness and equity in the remuneration of clinical lecturers across the country, warning that the prolonged dispute could have severe implications for medical training and patient care in the region.
