The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has expressed deep appreciation to her colleagues for their unwavering support since she assumed office. She pledged to uphold their trust and deliver on her responsibilities.

According to promptnews, Meranda, who took over as Speaker on January 13 following the impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, described her appointment as a privilege.

Speaking on Friday during a courtesy visit from WOMANIFESTO, a women’s rights advocacy group, at the Assembly complex, she reaffirmed her commitment to effective leadership. The delegation, consisting of over 30 activists, focuses on advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

“I am truly grateful to my colleagues for their confidence in me. As I have always stated, I am committed to not letting them down,” Meranda said.

She emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment, noting that she is one of only four female lawmakers in the 10th Assembly, which comprises 36 men. She urged the delegation to recognize the significance of her election, highlighting it as a progressive step by her colleagues.

“When you empower a woman, you empower a nation. My colleagues made the right choice, and I deeply appreciate their support,” she added.

Meranda also called for a partnership with WOMANIFESTO to advance initiatives that uplift women and girls. She assured the group that the Assembly remains open to policies that promote gender equity.

In response, WOMANIFESTO’s convener, Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, congratulated Meranda on making history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly. She encouraged her to uphold the trust placed in her and pledged the group’s support in advancing policies beneficial to women and girls.

Additionally, Ganiyu Sanni, the lawmaker representing Kosofe 1, commended the WOMANIFESTO delegation for their solidarity. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to legislative excellence and described Meranda as a leader with strong character and experience, emphasizing the need for continuous support as she navigates her new role.
