The Nigerian government has successfully reintegrated over 5,000 former Boko Haram fighters with their families after completing a six-month rehabilitation programme.
The National Counter Terrorism Centre confirmed that these individuals, who participated in the “Operation Safe Corridor” initiative, have not returned to the battlefield.
Ambassador Mairo Musa Abbas, head of the Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) program, shared the update during a discussion at the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.
She noted that the reintegration process has been supported by local communities and leaders, who continue to monitor the progress of these individuals.
The “Borno Model,” a strategy led by the state, has played a key role in the successful reunification of many fighters.
Abbas urged regional governors to align their efforts in managing former extremists to achieve lasting peace.
