The Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday, January 29, rejected allegations made by Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who claimed that opposition leaders were receiving funds from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Politics Nigeria, Atiku had suggested that the APC was paying N50 million to opposition leaders to prevent them from effectively challenging the government.
In a statement issued by LP spokesperson Obiora Ifoh, the party denied any involvement in such financial dealings, affirming that its leadership had never accepted money from any non-party members, organizations, or governments.
Ifoh expressed surprise and disbelief at the accusations, criticizing Atiku for making broad statements without providing any verifiable evidence other than unsubstantiated rumors. He questioned the credibility of such claims and pointed out that it was unprofessional for a prominent politician like Atiku to make such remarks without presenting tangible proof.
Highlighting the LP’s commitment to its role as a strong opposition force, Ifoh reassured the public that the party’s leadership had never received any form of external salary. “Salaries are public records and can easily be verified,” he said. “Atiku should be cautious in making sweeping generalizations and should speak for himself and his own party.”
Ifoh also emphasized the crucial role of the opposition in any democratic society, urging Atiku to back up his claims with concrete evidence.
