Chaos erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday as suspected thugs allegedly stormed a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting, causing a commotion at the venue.
The meeting, chaired by the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, was attended by several senior party figures, including National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Senator Ben Obi, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Board Secretary Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and former Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye.
Tensions escalated as a confrontation ensued between Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye, both of whom lay claim to the position of PDP National Secretary. Ude-Okoye, who arrived at the venue ahead of Anyanwu and Damagum, was later ejected following Anyanwu’s arrival.
In 2023, the PDP’s South East zone had nominated Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu as National Secretary after the latter emerged as the party’s candidate for the Imo State governorship election. The decision, backed by the South East PDP, was based on the argument that Anyanwu should relinquish the position due to his gubernatorial bid, adding to the ongoing discord within the party.
On 20 December 2024, the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld a High Court ruling that removed Senator Anyanwu as the PDP National Secretary and recognised Ude-Okoye as the rightful officeholder. However, a week ago, the Court of Appeal in Abuja issued a restraining order, allowing Anyanwu to retain the position pending the Supreme Court’s verdict on the appeal.
