The Ogun State High Court, sitting in Abeokuta, has dismissed the suit filed by Hon. Olakunle Oluomo challenging his removal as Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly.
According to Vanguard, delivering the judgment on Tuesday, Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora upheld the Assembly’s constitutional right to manage its internal affairs. The court ruled in favor of the defendants, represented by the current Assembly members under the leadership of Speaker Hon. Oludaisi Elemide.
The judgment resolves the legal dispute surrounding Oluomo’s impeachment, which was carried out by 22 out of the 26 Assembly members. The court affirmed that the impeachment process adhered to constitutional guidelines, bringing an end to months of legal uncertainty.
Oluomo’s removal on January 23, 2024, followed allegations of gross misconduct, including high-handedness, lack of transparency, poor leadership, financial misappropriation, and incitement of division among members.
Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, who represents the Odeda State Constituency, was subsequently elected as Speaker. His nomination was proposed by Hon. Adegoke Awoso and seconded by Hon. Ademola Adeniran, with 22 lawmakers voting in support during the plenary session.
Elemide is a seasoned legislator, having served in the Ogun State House of Assembly since 2011. He has held various leadership positions, including serving as Transition Chairman of Odeda Local Government in 2003.
With this ruling, the legitimacy of Elemide’s position as Speaker has been solidified, allowing the Assembly to move forward under his leadership.
